Surveillance for emerging pathogens

deltaBS

How can we better detect novel pathogens or high-risk pathogen strains?

We are investigating better ways to interrogate genomic data from metagenomic surveillance of clinical patient isolates and community and aeroplane wastewater. We have a particular focus on how we can identify novel strains and species, and how we can assess the potential risk these may pose and what actions we can take once we have identified a potential threat. â€‹

We are also investigating reproducible genomic signatures that signal a pathogen is adapting to human infection or developing a higher propensity for multidrug resistance. See our work on emerging invasive Salmonella for an example.
